Abstract

AIM: investigate Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in persons with diabetes mellitus type 2 and the associated with glycemic control. METHODS: Cross-sectional study that analyzed the association between H. pylori and glycemic control by direct diagnosis of h. Pylori in feces and determination of initial glycosylated hemoglobin levels (HbA1c) and fructosamine subsequent to eradication of h. Pylori to determine glycemic control, were subsequently analyzed by ANOVA the association between infection and glycemic control and / or the effect of eradication treatment.. RESULTS: We included 80 patients with diabetes type 2 with an average age of 66,43 +/- 10,26 years (8 males (10%) , 72 women (90%)). The incidence of H. pylori infection It was 37.5%, the association between H. pylori infection and poor control it was statistically significant (p<0,001) after the eradication of H. pylori. Age and sex did not differ significantly between the two groups (diabetics with infection and without infection). The HbA1c average level It was 8.17 % in the case group and 7,4% in the control group; Among the 80 patients recruited, the 100% had successful H. Pylori eradication, The average blood glucose levels before treatment was 234.2 +/- 40.4 mg / dL and after treatment was 161.26 ± 32,9mg / dL and the difference was significant ( p = 0.004 ). CONCLUSION: H. pylori infection in patients with diabetes type 2 can adversely affect glycemic control and eradication therapy can improve the average blood glucose levels in this population. More research is needed to evaluate the effects of the eradication of bacteria between different variables and characteristics of diabetic conditions in Ecuador.
